Heart 2 Heart: The Connections Band's Dan Fogelberg Tribute Concert

Dan Fogelberg was one of the great singer/songwriters of the 70s and 80s who passed away in 2007. His fans can be found around the globe, and new ones are born each day. Three North Texas musicians—Rev. Eric Folkerth, Rev. Rusty King, and Mike Sheehan —are three of the more avid Dan Fogelberg fans in North Texas. They are also founding members of The ConnectionsBand, a group of musically gifted United Methodist ministers and their equally talented friends who have traveled North Texas for several years, covering 70s hits while raising money for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and Imagine No Malaria. To date, the band has raised more than $220,000 through their benefit concerts.

It’s also no coincidence that The Connections Band’s first tribute concert in 2006 featured the music of Dan Fogelberg. In August 2010, Folkerth, King, and Sheehan were among several Fogelberg tribute artists who were invited to attend the dedication of the Dan Fogelberg memorial at Riverfront Park in Fogelberg’s hometown of Peoria, IL. The Dan Fogelberg Celebration Weekend in Peoria has since become an annual event, an event these three wanted to share with North Texas.

In February, the band, with the support of the Allen Symphonic Chorus, the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, and First United Methodist Church of Allen, brings their own Dan Fogelberg Tribute Concert to Allen, Texas, on Saturday, February 16, 6:30pm, at the Allen ISD Performing Arts Center at Allen High School, 300 Rivercrest Drive, Allen, TX 75013. The event is part of a two-day Dan Fogelberg Tribute Weekend with a welcome party hosted by the Allen Philharmonic on Friday, February 15. This is the fourth Connections Concert hosted by First United Methodist Church of Allen. This FREE event is unique in that all the music to be performed was recorded by Dan Fogelberg. The concert also features several Dan Fogelberg tribute artists who regularly attend the annual Peoria event as well as the 60-voice Allen Symphony Chorus and members of Allen Philharmonic Orchestra. One special guest is Glen Spreen, Fogelberg’s colleague and orchestral arranger who will conduct several numbers with the orchestra.

All proceeds from this concert benefit UMCOR and their relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

First United Methodist Church of Allen is proud to announce the return of the Connections Band to Allen on Friday, March 30, 7:00pm, in concert at the new Allen ISD Performing Arts Center.

FUMC Allen began hosting annual Connections Band benefit concerts in Allen two years ago at the Joe Farmer Recreation Center. This year, we are privileged and honored to host the Connections Band, an incredible group of United Methodist ministers and their music-loving friends, for their newest show "SuperHits of the 70s, TWO, at the beautiful Performing Arts Center located at 300 Rivercrest Boulevard in Allen, Texas.

The Connections Band, whose show features a full stage of almost 20 musicians, gave us part one of this series last April and those who attended were hooked. This new show delivers a variety of hits from the decade that gave us some of the most amazing music of all time. You'll rock out to songs by Bob Seeger, Jackson Browne, Electric Light Orchestra, Boz Scaggs, Marvin Gaye, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Walsh, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and many more, all in the comfort of Allen’s newest state-of-the art performance hall.

This concert is a milestone for the band’s six-year history. This date commemorates the Connection Band’s fortieth show! And while all of their concerts are FREE, they sing to support causes, such as Imagine No Malaria and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). This particular concert is a benefit for disaster relief, with 100 percent of all funds collected going to UMCOR, which provides disaster relief around the world. At the top of our concerns this year is the destruction and devastation caused by spring storm in America in 2011 and 2012.

While your gifts are not required, no offering is too small! Since the band first began performing together on March 31, 2006, they have raised approximately $196,000 for causes, such as Imagine No Malaria and UMCOR, in 39 shows. The band hopes to raise at least $4,000 in donations through this show on March 30 to top the $200,000 mark!
