Lay Speaking Ministries in the East District

The East District does not have a formal organization, due to time and distance. The main gatherings have been trainings. However, the Lay Speaking Ministries is a vital part of the church life in the East District. The lay speakers are active members in their home church and lead in ministries beyond the walls of the church.

Mary Reynolds, Bells UMC
Not only do they fill pulpits as needed, there are a number of churches that do not have a clergy assigned (ordained or local pastor, therefore, lay speakers are filling in on a regular basis. Hail UMC and Lannius UMC has used lay speakers once a month for years.

Dennis Smith, Anna UMC
The church in Ector has had a revival once a year for many years that has been led by Lay Speakers. The pastor enjoys the opportunity to sit back and worship and be fed by others. Everything from the opening prayer, testimony, witness, music, and the message is provided by lay speakers. The Holy Spirit fires up all involved. This year the revival was a collaborative effort of lay speakers from three districts.

Jerry Reynolds and Kathy Camp, Bells UMC
There are lay speakers serving in prison ministries, campus ministries, and nursing home ministries with regular teaching and preaching on weekly basis.

Melba Harris, St. Marks UMC and David Stanton, Tinney Chapel UMC
The East District has carried on with the tradition of a yearly Laity Celebration, comprised of dinner and high energy worship. Lay Speakers helped the planning of the celebration and helped lead worship. This year the message of inspiration was given by Gene Stallings, sports legend football coach. Last year the message was delivered by Bishop Bledsoe.
