Dallas South churches join celebration

When the North Texas Annual Conference celebrated the success of the Bishop’s Initiative for Africa University at the June 9 “Africa Night” at Hamilton Park UMC, no group was more proud than the churches of the Dallas South District.

The Dallas Northeast District Lay Speaking Ministry will offer the adult basic Lay Speaking course and the advanced course in teaching adults on July 19 and 26. Classes will be conducted at St. Stephen UMC, Mesquite, with on-site registration set for 8:30 a.m. Applicants should bring their registration with the pastor’s signature on the first day of training. On the 2008 Annual Conference opening day, June 9, the NTC followed the bad news of the statistician’s report with good news from the Creating Congregations Team, then heard how even the City of Dallas appreciates good news among United Methodists.

White roses placed one by one in a vase symbolized the North Texas Conference’s June 10 remembrance of 14 ordained clergy and five clergy spouses who have died within the past year. The 2008 deacon and elder candidates, who would be ordained that evening, placed the roses as a symbol of continuity in ministry.

Conference Statistician Rev. Marvin Guier and Bishop Alfred L. Norris both responded strongly to 2007 data showing decreases in all three primary units of measure for the North Texas Conference: Total membership, average worship attendance and average Sunday School attendance.

“The number one crisis in Christianity is the lack of men and lack of men growing,” according to the General Secretary of United Methodist Men. Rev. David Adams told those attending the United Methodist Men’s luncheon on Tuesday at the North Texas Annual Conference, “We need to extend grace to more men because not enough men are in church.”

Conference youth leaders – one stepping out, one coming in – received the NTC’s standing ovation following their reports on June 9.

First UMC, Denton, won the “Best Local Church History” award among the churches of seven conferences participating in the Texas United Methodist Historical Society for their book, Open Hearts: the First 150 Years.
Those people attending the Commission on Archives and History luncheon meeting on June 9 during the North Texas Annual Conference in Plano learned of First UMC, Denton’s receiving this award. This history won because of its excellent storytelling.

Local members of The Order of Saint Luke are planning a gathering on July 7 for worship, including the Eucharist and discussion about forming a chapter of the Order, which emphasizes liturgy and worship, in the northern sector of the Dallas Metroplex.

On the theme of living the abundant life, Conference Lay Leader Billy Ratcliff ended his Billy Ratcliff ended his four-year term by telling the opening session June 9 that "I have had a more abundant and better life than I ever dreamed."
He added, "Falling in love with Jesus is the best thing I've ever done. But falling is fairly easy. Staying is hard."

This was the North Texas Conference on a colorful, Africa-themed Monday night, June 9, at Hamilton Park UMC, Dallas, celebrating ties with United Methodism's Africa University half a world away in Zimbabwe.
