In a feast for eyes and ears, C.C. Young featured artists young and, well, not so young in its annual "Art Is Ageless" celebration May 5 at First UMC, Richardson.
The real celebration was in the paintings, needlepoint, jewelry, etc. festooning bulletin boards all around the room and in the violins, violas, cellos, piano and harps wafting Bach and Handel, etc. into the air.
At C.C. Young the watchword is "The Spirit Is Ageless." Five residents proved as much by winning the 2007 creative spirit awards through judged competition. They are:
- Hazel Cattlett, age 71, for a watercolor titled "Prickly Pear Cactus"
-
Jim Cook, age 80, for a pettit point titled "Mom"
- Ralph Eilers, age 74, for a photograph titled "Welcome Home"
- Diane Pease, age 65, for a fabric wallhanging titled "She Walks in Beauty"
- Kathlyn E. Terry, age 72, for jewelry titled "Safari."
Not that anyone was counting, but that's a combined 362 years of proving that art is, indeed, ageless. Each winner received a beautiful glass award from event chairwoman Nancy Ann Hunt and emcee Rev. Dr. Don Benton.
A special 2007 Creative Spirit Partner Award went to the husband and wife team of Paul and Lorraine Landefeld. They're the creative artists behind the Talent Education Music Studios of Plano, whose student string players unfailingly charm their audience no matter the decades of age differences.
Entertainment also included a dramatic reading by Jenna Worthen, former member of the SMU drama faculty, and a video by C.C. Young staff member and North Texas Conference retiree Rev. Sammy Hargrove.
The celebration's printed program pointed to the scheduled Sept. 9 opening of C.C. Young's new Learning and Cultural Arts Center, housing an auditorium, theatre, patio and garden. A work-in-progress photograph of the new center evidenced that artistic celebration extends to those who design and construct buildings. The new center’s director is Sarah Jarvis.
Rev, Don Benton, NTC Retired, coordinating pastoral care at C.C. Young Retirement Community, has announced that he is seeking ministerial leadership on a persession basis. Dr. Benton says that he needs Sunday leadership at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and other times during the week.
