Warren UMC VBS to highlight civil rights
Most people have heard of Vacation Bible School (VBS). Now comes Vacation "Micah" School.
Vacation "Micah" School is a fun-filled intergenerational study of our Christian duty to actively engage in social justice. Classes will be explored through the lens of historic Dallas civil rights actions that the ancestors and elders have fearlessly undertaken. These "come-as-you-are" energized sessions will take place at Warren UMC, Dallas, July 23–27, beginning daily with free refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 8:00 p.m.
The United Methodist General Board of Church and Society is helping fund this innovative VBS.
The Vacation "Micah" School school, classes are free and open to the public, and are equally relevant for adults and children, whether they attend church or not. Children's and youth classes are for kindergarten through high school.
With little or no money or education, Dallas elders and ancestors dared to fight voting, education, housing and environmental injustices, to name a few.
"It is our duty to ignite our God-given power by spreading the good news while continuing the fight for justice.
Vacation "Micah" School's name is derived from the Bible verse, Micah 6:8 which reads, "[a]nd what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God," says pastor Rev. Perry Crenshaw.
