Christ UMC, Farmers Branch, plans Jubilee Weekend
Rev. Vic Casad, left, presents a "Wow gift," Christ UMC, Farmers Branch, 2007 Apportionments, paid in full to Bishop Alfred L. Norris, center, at the Jan. 7 Jubilee kick-off.
Some of the earliest members of Christ UMC, Farmers Branch, were honored as the Jubilee Year bagan on Jan.7.
Christ UMC, Farmers Branch, will hold its October Jubilee Weekend Festival Oct. 13-14 as the congregation and guests celebrate the end of a year of celebrating 50 years of ministry.
The events begin at 5:00 p.m. Saturday with the United Methodist Men hosting a pancake dinner at the church. Sunday activities will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Montgomery Elementary School, where the first worship services were held. The R.L. Turner High School Drum Corps will lead a procession to the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. The children, youth, and charter members will be featured in the parade, which will include special banners, including one created for the Jubilee.
Once at the Valwood Parkway entrance to the church, the marchers will pause for a musical proclamation before entering the sanctuary for the 10:15 a.m. worship service. (There will
be only one worship service on Jubilee Sunday.)
There will be an old fashioned chuck wagon barbecue in the church's Family Life Center following the worship service, and at 2:00 p.m. professional musicians Johnny Marshall & Friends will provide the afternoon's entertainment.
The Christ UMC Jubilee Committee has compiled a history of the church, which reflects the growth of the surrounding community. In the early days, when the school at the Montgomery site was called Valwood Elementary, the congregation worshipped in the cafeteria and held Sunday School in the halls. The first service was held Jan. 6, 1957, and 44 people joined that day.
The church began to meet at its 2807 Valwood location in 1959.
Christ UMC members have been working all year to plan the Jubilee. Both the exterior and interior of the building have been refurbished and special jewelry and shirts designed to commemorate the occasion.
The October Jubilee Weekend comes after two other major anniversary year events. At the Jan. 7 kick-off day, Bishop Alfred L. Norris preached for morning worship and eight robed ministers, including past pastors, served communion. Charter members were honored guests. A highlight of the morning came as the pastor, Rev. Vic Casad, presented the "WOW gift," a check for all the church's 2007 apportionments, to Bishop Norris.
On April Steinway artists Nielson and Young presented a piano concert of hymns and a variety of other musical offeirngs.
