About the Workshop
What to say, what to say? The blank sheet, whether paper or an online document, stares back at you as you try to figure it out. You want to excite people about your church event or tell about your great mission trip or touch people with a heart-rending story about real change in lives.
And once you’ve banged out the piece, how do you headline or title it? If it’s a book, how do you develop an author’s discipline and move from idea to full chapters? If it’s a column, what are the key points to make it resonate?
It’s a fast-changing world as writing and journalism evolve with technology every day. “How to Write Like a Journalist,” led by North Texas Conference Communications Officer Sheron C. Patterson and longtime Dallas Morning News editor Linda S. Johnson, will fill you in on the trends, both online and print, and teach you the techniques that will make your writing compelling. This Connect 360 workshop will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at the NTC Ministry Center.
You’ll get an overview on how to craft a powerful story and make your point effectively. You’ll learn about long-form narratives, listicles, blogs, nut graphs and more. Among the topics:
- How to lift your story beyond the mundane.
- Eliciting details that fascinate.
- Busting myths on English usage.
- Overused words and phrases that need mercy killings.
So come prepared to learn, ask questions and pick up skills that sharpen your writing.
