Message from Vic Casad on the Passing of Rev. Bill Bryan: August 30, 2017
This week I am mourning the death of Dr. William Jennings “Bill” Bryan III.
Williams J. Bryan “Bill” Bryan, Keith Payne Boone and I were in the same youth group at Kessler Park UMC in the late 1960s. My father was the pastor, and I was the errant PK trying my best to distance myself from all things pious.
The Bryan and Boone families were integrally involved in the life of the church and that life was rich, lively, full and blessed. Both Bill and Keith received the call to ministry several years before I did even though I am a couple years older. That happens I guess when you’re running away from all things pious.
Though I might be older in age, I consider them my older brothers in faith and experience. There have been numerous times they have been my teachers and guides as I’ve navigated the often turbulent seas of ministry.
Back in the 1950s, my Dad along with Ken McIntosh, Bill Stephenson, Bill Crouch and others formed a weekly study group they called the Wesley Study group. These founding members are now in the church triumphant, but early on they invited Bill Bryan to join them, and I think until this week Bill was the longest continuous member of this group; which still meets every Wednesday morning at University Park UMC. After my father died, they invited me to join them. I stayed with them for several years.
I heard Bill was there last Wednesday before he died on Sunday morning.
I am grateful for the prophetic ministry and friendship of Bill Bryan. His memory will continue to influence my life and ministry, as it will many others.
In His service and yours,
