A New Vision, A New Voice ~ The North Texas Conference
Message from Vic Casad: Jan. 12, 2018
Notes from the Heartland
I first want to report on our East District Apportionment payout for 2017. We finished with 98.5% of our $1,081,054 district apportionment received. I want thank the 82 churches who fulfilled their covenant commitments 100%. I also want to thank 11 churches who were able to go the second mile with apportionment gifts over their covenant allocation.
These churches are:
- Campbell UMC
- Crandall UMC
- FUMC Mount Vernon
- FUMC Sulphur Springs
- Kaufman UMC
- Martin Memorial UMC
- Quinlan UMC
- Roxton UMC
- Tinney Chapel UMC
- Wesley UMC-Bonham
- Westview UMC
Thank you all.
I also need to report that 254 churches of the North Texas Conference paid 100% of their apportioned commitment totally, 96.9%, which is the highest pay out in 10 years. It was a good year.
District Leadership Training
I am excited to tell you about our upcoming District Leadership Training Event scheduled for:
Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at First UMC Sulphur Springs.
I am very pleased that all four of our Conference Center Directors will be with us to share in a leadership forum and a panel discussion related to the work of their Centers and their plans for 2018.
Joining us on the 27th will be:
- Rev. Andy Lewis, the Director of the Center for Missional Outreach and the Assistant to the Bishop. Andy will talk about how the North Texas Conference is preparing to send relief mission teams to South Texas in response Hurricane Harvey. He will also update us on the work of the Zip Code Connection, One+One Initiative in public schools, and other Conference mission opportunities.
- Rev. Marti Soper, the Director of the Center for Leadership Development. Marti will update us on her work in developing principles Christian leaders (lay and clergy) for the transformation of the world in areas of: camping and retreat ministries, campus ministries, children and youth ministries, leadership coaching, MinistrySafe, Luke 4, and strengthening discipleship formation in local churches.
- Rev. Jodi Smith, the Director of the Center for Connectional Resources. Jodi will bring a wealth of knowledge and information related to the administrative work of our churches. Her Center oversees the central treasury of the Conference. She manages the Conference health insurance programs, all property and liability insurance claims and concerns, clergy pensions, and all policy and procedural issues related to local churches, clergy and staff.
- Rev. Owen Ross, the Director of the Center for Church Development. Owen’s Center is responsible for all new church starts and all new extended campus starts, plus the Healthy Church Initiative and Small Church Initiative programs. His Center also provides resources for helping local churches become more intentional in reaching their mission field in their neighborhood and greater community.
The morning will begin with an introduction for the Center Directors on their work and plans for 2018, and then we will open up the floor for a panel discussion with questions and responses.
When this is over, we will adjourn into five breakout sessions. Each Center Director will lead a session related their work and how it relates to your local church.
Marti will lead a session for those working in discipleship ministries, children and youth, camping and retreats, and adult Christian formation.
Andy will lead a session for those thinking about organizing a mission team to South Texas this year.
Owen will lead a session on church vitality and how churches can experience new energy through community engagement.
Jodi will lead a session for all trustees and finance leaders related to administrative issues and new law and policies that will affect local churches.
I (Vic) will lead a session for all the SPRC Chairs as we enter into this new spring appointment season.
Please promote this District Training within your local church and bring you key leaders to this important gathering to kick off the new year.
In His Service and Yours,
